Supuration - The Cube

The Cube offers pop music melodic sensibility ala the famed Gothenburg scene, mixed with the Voivod-esque dissonant passages and death metal riffing. The greater surprise is the band's almost flawless integration of the album's brighter moments with its contrasting darker moments. These are often "at odds" with each other, but are perfectly sewn together with ease. The balance is breathtaking at times. Using their melodic pedigree the band navigate through their none-so-easy concept of the after-life - approaching it in a way that is contrary to the mainstream belief of "paradise" or the counter-cultural theme of "escape." The band uses alternate chord voicings, precise technical riffing and rhythmic techniques (in a sense making it a "progressive metal" album) to colour these songs with evocative and emotive themes. The band uses this wide-ranging palette to paint scenes within the music, very distinct themes and motifs that often over-lap into other songs, building a full-cycle over the entire album.
