Demilich
Nespithe (1993)
A musical enigma, on Nespithe the band create phrases and abstract passages from obscure note combinations, like a necromancer shaping life from death. Demilich codify jazz-like 'free spirit' and transform it into something harmonic and engrossing in its appetite for the ebbs and tides of chaos found in this irrational existence, befitting of a powerful death metal album. As close to anything else in death metal comes to implementing and perfecting the idea of meta-structures in the song-writing process. (transferring the harmonic idea from one phrase - or the "chaos" embodying it into the central idea of an entire sub-section or even song).
